Quote Saturday #3

Just enough time left in the day for a quote Saturday so here we go…

QUOTE #1

“You hear what I said, Miss Kubelik? I absolutely adore you.”

“Shut up and deal”

My favourite quote of all time! This one isn’t very philosophical it’s just an amazing moment in an amazing film. Billy Wilder’s “The Apartment” is by far my favourite film of the 60s due to it’s charm and class. There are some amazingly funny and romantic quotes in it but this moment is literally one of my favourite movie moments of all time, like I’ve actually dreamt of saying this to someone (not that anyone would tell me they loved me whilst playing cards) I just love the comeback and Shirley MacLaine’s execution is absoultely superb! In fact, her whole performance is superb! So if you’re looking for an awesome, old, black and white, rom-com go to “The Apartment” and you won’t be disappointed.

QUOTE #2

“Stay positive, tomorrow will be amazing” – Unknown

This one doesn’t need much explaining I just like it really. I believe positive thinking is the way to go.

QUOTE #3

“wag and the world wags with you; howl and they put you outside” -Lady and the Tramp

I feel there are two ways to interpret this quote. Firstly, that positivity is a much more attractive trait than being down and harsh all the time, challenging us to stay as positive as we can in this world. Another interpretation is that the world only really cares about you when you’re happy and on top form. When you’re not, people shut you out. There’s an even bigger challenge in this, that if you really care about someone you should be with them whether they’re on top of the world or completely down in the dumps. Yet, this is also a challenge on our perception towards those we don’t know. Everyone is worth our time and effort no matter how much we know them or think we can help, for me, this quote is both challenging and encouraging, it’s a good one.

So I realise I haven’t put much detail into this post but really I think these quotes are brilliant even though they don’t need to be analysed!

See you next time!

Quote Saturday #2

I haven’t posted in a week because I have been super busy! I’m not going to apologise because I don’t think anyone reads this anyway!

Hannah Knox requested I tone down this post because apparently the last one sounded like I’d been out drinking…I hadn’t I was just excited for Walt Disney and his awesomeness! Anyway here goes…Quote Saturday number 2.

QUOTE #1

“Life is a great big canvas. Throw all the paint on it you can.” -Danny Kaye

This is a similar theme to the quote from Fight Club last week however Danny Kaye took a different stance. Instead of the shock tactics Fight Club used he points out that the best way to enjoy life is to make it colourful, inspiring and, most importantly, beautiful. My mother makes absolutely beautiful canvases so this quote really spoke to me as I can sense the time and effort it takes her to make one. Here, though, I don’t see Danny as speaking about carefully constructing a canvas (or life) but rather, taking every opportunity to just throw paint at it, or in life terms to take every opportunity you can to live your life. Sometimes the most messy of lives can be the most beautiful and the most inspiring. I read a story of the first women to cycle around the world, Juliana Buhring, who grew up in a cult that forced her sister and some of her friends to kill themselves. For me, she is the perfect example of a paint-thrower as she walked away from that cult and became an inspiration to many young women today. So go on, be a paint-thrower and embrace the mess, the uncertainty and the chaos of life. Someday, you may realise the most messy moments, were the most beautiful. Take risks, live life!

QUOTE #2

“You didn’t get me down, Ray” -Raging Bull

If you’ve never seen Raging Bull I really recommend it. It’s one of De Niro’s finest. I love this bit of the film and I love this quote. Sugar Ray Robinson batters the life out of Jake, like literally to a pulp, and Jake stays on his feet and says this beauty of a line. I think this is one of the best quotes of the film (partly because all of the others have a lot of swearing in them) because it reminds me that no matter what life throws at me, it can never truly “get me down”. Whoever crosses my path and whatever they do to me they can never beat me to a pulp so much that I’m out of the game. Everytime you face a knock back, think of this moment, Raging Bull, Robert De Niro, pick yourself up and get on with the rest of your future!

QUOTE #3

“Boo! Kitty!” -Sully and Boo, Monsters Inc.

I literally put this on because I watched Monsters Inc today and these are the last two lines. They make me so emotional and I have no idea why. I have nothing deep to say about this quote, it’s just one of those quotes that will forever give me warm fuzzles in my belly. So sweet.

So that was Quote Saturday 🙂 See you next time!

Quote Saturday #1

IT’S QUOTE SATURDAY!! You know what that means…actually you don’t because THIS IS MY FIRST QUOTE SATURDAY!!!

Right so here’s the deal: every Saturday, without fail (well…) I am going to give you my QUOTES OF THE WEEEEEEK (how exciting)! One will be general, one will be from an awesome movie and the other will be from an equally awesome DISNEY MOVIEEEEE (yes, Disney deserves capitals). Right, so here goes the first Quote Saturday of the alittlemagicandsparkle blogggg 😀

QUOTE #1

“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible”-Walt Disney

So I have a massive blackboard on my bedroom wall and every week I select a quote I love to motivate/inspire/make me laugh and this week I picked the one above 😀

I love Walt Disney a lot (mainly because he brought us Mary Poppins and my life WOULD NOT be the same without Mazza P) but he really has some great things to say about living with imagination, almost childlike. I think this is an amazing thing as a lot of people lose their magic and sparkle as they get older, and seen as I’m getting older (like I’m an adult now woah) I don’t want this to happen to me, so Walt, well done for your awesome quotes! This quote, though, speaks to those of us who feel as if we’re no good. People who don’t feel they have anything to bring to the table; people who are struggling in their different environments at the moment and can’t see a way out. I know a lot of people have exams coming up and sometimes these exams seem impossible: you look at that mound of revision and you think “gosh, that’s a lot” or you look at your target grade and you think “that is completely impossible/unobtainable/unhelpful” but you know what, Walt had it right, you can do the “impossible” and it’s heaps of fun because you challenge both yourself and the perceptions of others along the way! I love challenges, I thrive the most when I’m challenged so, personally, this quote rings true with me and my motivations but it’s also an amazing quote to inspire us to achieve our goals no matter how far off they seem and, of course, have fun along the way!!

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4v13

QUOTE #2

“This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time”-Fight Club

Man, I only just watched fight club today and it’s such an amazing film to quote! Brad Pitt has some awesome lines (although this isn’t one of his). Another motivationally (that’s not a word) one here basically saying “C’MON AND LIVE ALREADY”. Y’know today I lay in bed all day and right now I’m thinking “wow that was a waste of a day” (except I did watch a film, an opera AND a musical so…) but seriously, how many people go through life thinking that? Am I right? We all do it! Now I’m no life expert but it seems to me that we complain an awful lot about how our lives are panning out but never stop to fix them, to do something better or to make a stand. I want to challenge you today to live life to the full because as the guy says your life will end sometime, that’s not morbid, it’s fact! So today, are you living life to the full or are you sitting watching Wagner in bed like me?

“I have come that you may have life and have it to the full” John 10v10

QUOTE #3

“Now Woody, he’s been my pal for as long as I can remember. He’s brave, like a cowboy should be. And kind, and smart. But the thing that makes Woody special, is he’ll never give up on you…ever. He’ll be there for you, no matter what.” -Andy, Toy Story 3

Think I just shed a tear. This quote is so special. This is exactly what my best friends are like. I have 6 best friends: Bethan, HK, Elanor, Greavo, Beth and Stewie and they really really mean the world to me, like the whole world. They all have their individual qualities, some of them are musical, some of them are clever, some of them are kind, some of them can speak different languages but they all have one thing in common: they are always, always there for me. That’s something I take for granted so much and I rarely think about but it’s completely true. I’m a human, I make mistakes, I do terrible things sometimes but these fellas never ever ever say they’ve had enough of me (well not often anyway) and they’re always there for me no matter what time it is (seriously, HK was psychoanalysing me at 1 in the morning the other night) so THANKS GUYS! But this isn’t just about me and my friends: I’m sure this rings true for a lot of people, be thankful for that. We live in a consumerism culture, a culture in which we never look around to see what we already have. We just care about obtaining more. I dare you to stop and to think about your best friends, your family, your cats, whoever, there’s someone in this world who will never leave your side. BE THANKFUL FOR THAT, just as I’m sure Andy was. Gratitude is a challenge, a daily challenge, remind yourself every day of those you love and who love you and thank God for them. And if you haven’t already told them: tell them you’re thankful for them, please, today.

“…the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 35v6

Well that was Quote Saturday! Hope you enjoyed it and I hope to see you next week for some more awesome quotes and soppiness!

The Hardest Thing to Give Away

French lessons…I know what everyone is thinking…boring, yeah? They’re actually pretty informative, we talk about all kinds of deep stuff like the absurdity of the world, existentialism and other stuff I don’t really understand. Today, the discussion turned to prisoners on death row due to the series of programmes “Life on Death Row”. So one of these guys raped a girl and her friend, tied them to chairs and shot them in the back until her friend died. The girl was left with a gaping hole in her back from the gun shots and the guy faced the death penalty. The most shocking thing about this story was that the girl said she forgave her friends killer. “I could never forgive someone who did that”, one of my friends said. I had to agree with her, I myself probably wouldn’t be able to forgive someone who did that to my friend and I but thinking deeper about it made me realise that in God’s eyes I am no better than this guy and he chose to forgive me. Firstly, how amazing is that! Really think about that, a God who you’ve stabbed in the back so many times chooses to forgive you each and every time if you just say sorry! And secondly I was challenged to reflect this God by forgiving no matter what the cost has been to me. When we forgive, it sets us free. So you see, French lessons do come in useful from time to time!

Wow!

So I’ve just got back from Austria which was absolutely amazing! I went skiing and there seriously is nothing better in the world, not even chocolate…or food in general. It was so good to see old friends and meet new people and ski all the time but the most amazing thing I found was seeing creation and being in nature all the time. Just looking at those mountains and snow and even trees made me all tingly inside because the sheer beauty of it all makes you stop and think…I am literally tiny, properly tiny and these things are so amazing and big and beautiful, why do I spend so much time worrying about my life and myself instead of praising God for the amazing things he’s made. So the challenge is: look at the beauty around you, when you’re stressing about exams or deadlines or whatever else is going on in your life, just look. You’ll thank me 🙂

The Perilous Prom Problems

Do you remember your prom? Finding the dress, shoes, perfect hair, make up and nails and that’s before deciding where you’re getting ready, what you’re doing after and worrying about how you’re going to cope with revision in the morning. Prom is one of the biggest stresses in the world for girls. Am I too dressy? Am I not dressy enough? How am I going to walk in these heels? Straight or curly? Statement lips or eyes? Do I look chubby? For 2 months the whole world stops and it’s all about how we look, how we feel and what we eat to stay looking amazing. But has anyone ever stopped to think what the real meaning of a prom is?

My best friend is head girl of our school (she’s a brilliant head girl for the record, but none of us ever doubted that) and she has spent months and months planning our prom alongside coursework, revision, school work, organising other things in school and being a daughter, sister and friend to the people in her life. I cannot describe how proud I am of what she does everyday, that’s a different (soppier) story though. Anyway, she’s planned this prom and people have decided they’re not going. For some people it’s money problems, which I fully accept as a reasonable excuse, some people just can’t afford it and I understand that. For some people, though, it’s “I can’t be in the same room as her” or “I don’t want to see anyone in this school ever again”. I got angry at these people this morning as I considered these excuses rude and inconsiderate towards my best friend, but after school I reflected on the problem and instead of being angry I was disappointed. I was disappointed because we seem to have destroyed any remainder of sentiment from this event. Prom is meant to be a last night together, I night were we throw away social boundaries and have one last night of pure bliss before leaving and probably never seeing three quarters of those people ever again. I think our year group has misunderstood this.

Then it occured to me (and the whole point of this post is) that we shouldn’t let other people stop us from making memories. Our memories are personal, no one else has the same memory bank as us. For me, memories are some of the most precious things in my life. People shouldn’t be denied that because someone doesn’t like them or vice versa, that’s just an outrage.

So next time you feel unable to do something because of the reaction or presence of someone else, remember that everytime you do something a memory grows. Do you want to cherish that memory forever? Or let someone else cherish it without you?

Don’t just survive, shine.
